It all started with a stake on a blog called Pop Culture Brain, by Alex Rabinowitz three years ago. He wrote:
Yesterday the web got its first mouthful of the songs that will be featured in next week`s season finale of Glee.Among them was an all female acappella rendition of Usher`s "Yeah!" Thecover is a rousing, empowered track, especially when sung by a femalegroup. All this would have been fine and dandy, if it weren`t seeminglyripped off a strong working, student run collegiate acappella group.
Rabinowitz continued that "sources within a cappella circles with ties to Divisi have confirmed to me" that the picture had "reached out" to Divisi to build an official compensation deal "only for it to come apart at the final minute, with 'Glee' going forward and doing their variation of the song anyway." The initial post got picked up here and yon, with PopEater.com mentioning the controversy, along with bloggers who pursue the a cappella world. Turns out the original Divisi arrangement was done by Evynne Hollens, who's married to a mate a cappella singer, Peter Hollens, former member of the U of O's On the Rocks (a recent lineup of the group competed on "The Sing-Off" last season.)
Rabinowitz posted an update, however. In a follow-up, he wrote, "the subject has been rectified." He cites a place by Peter Hollens on Facebook. From Hollen's post:
"Just got off the ring with a head lawyer with Fox. All iswell. Credit will be granted and everything is on the up and up. Have togive a HUUUUUGE hand toEd Boyerformaking things happen. Can`t say enough about what he did, his email andhis help. Big props to the aca world creating a mother and making thnigshappen.
Credit where reference is due. Look out for the Divisi inspired track in Tuesday NY finale of Glee and keep supportingstudent run, amateur, and professional acappella music."
I'm talking to Peter Hollens in a few minutes, so will give more information to follow. Watch this space!
